Lead in Face Paint? -- Wellness Wire

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 by Annie Bond

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has found that there are unexpected chemicals in the face paint brands that they tested, and none of the chemicals are on the label. Components of other ingredients, the discovered suspects include heavy metals lead, nickel, cobalt, and chromium. There is no safe level for lead, a known neurotoxin. For this report, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics sent 10 children's face paints to an independent lab to test for heavy metals. Among their findings: 10 out of 10 children's face paints we tested contained low levels of lead, ranging from 0.05 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm).
